There are several options you can consider when hanging curtains in an arched window. It is a trickier task compared to installing curtains on regular straight-edged windows, and what you do have to decide is how prominent you want the arched window to be in your home. Some would rather not hide the beautiful shape of the arch, yet others prefer to downplay the arch design for some reason or other.

Hang curtains above the arch: One way to hang your curtains is to treat the window as you would any other window. Attach the brackets and hang the curtains on the rod above the window. If you use a longer rod that extends past the window, the whole window will be revealed when you draw the curtains back. In the case that you want to hide the arch, you can add a valance to cover the top portion of the window. One instance in which you may want to do this is if the arched window is along a wall with other rectangular windows and you want to create continuity among all of them.

Hang curtains below the arch: Another option you have is to hang the curtains below the arched section, so that just the bottom portion is covered. If you have a large window, covering only the bottom portion would still provide the privacy you need, while letting natural light through the arched portion. If you have a decorative arch such as one with a stained glass window, this is a good option to allow the arch to be displayed. You may also set an arch shaped handmade metal wall art or copper metal art inside the arch to filter light and add a decorative touch without blocking the window.

Curved rod: You can purchase a curved curtain rod at your local hardware store or from an online store. Measure the curve in order to get the right length for the rod. Follow the instructions on the kit to install the mounting clips, slide the rod through the curtain pocket, and mount the rod on the clips. If you have used regular length curtains, you will need to cut the bottom edge straight and hem it. Usually the design of the arch will necessitate that you open the curtains with side ties, rather than drawing them along the rod.

Hang sheers in the arch and drapes below the arch: If you wish to increase privacy and have the whole window covered without masking the arch, you can consider hanging sheer or lace curtains on a curved rod and installing a straight rod below the arch so you can hang thicker drapes. The double window treatment lets you regulate the amount of light coming into the room.

Hang curtains from hooks: A final suggestion is to install hooks along the arch of the window. This works best with curtains with tab tops or grommets. Choose wall hooks that coordinate with the curtains and the décor of your home. You may want to first test out the positioning of the hooks by using thumb tacks. If using regular length curtains, you will need to trim the bottom edge straight and hem. Use a tieback to hold the curtains open.
