Using Wall Art for a Room’s Design Inspiration
64When decorating a room, the inspiration for the overall decor and design can often come from one object or accessory. This can be especially true in the case of wall art and metal wall sculptures. By using a piece of wall art as the overall inspiration for the room's design, you can create a cohesive decorating theme which can tie the entire room together. Not only is this a great way of coordinating colors within a room, but it can also give you a specific theme that you can carry throughout the room.
Using Paintings or Prints as Inspiration
Using a painting or a print can often be an excellent way of gaining inspiration for a room's overall design and color. By pulling colors out of the painting, and using them in other areas of the room, such as for wall colors, upholstery colors, or as an accent color to use in small areas throughout the entire room, you can effectively tie the room together visually. This is also a great way of achieving a color palette that you know will work well together: If the colors look great together in the artwork, they will also look great together in other places throughout the room. You can also pick up on the subject matter of a painting or print and carry that theme throughout the room. For example, a drawing of a seascape might be the inspiration for an entire room based on a nautical theme. You can also imitate portions of the art in other areas of the room, such as creating a floral arrangement that uses flowers similar to those in a painting.

Using Wall Art to Inspire a Child's Room
Using wall art as the overall inspiration for decorating a child's room can be an especially fun technique to use. For example, an antique nursery rhyme print can be used as the basis for a baby's nursery, or a print of a teddy bear could be the inspiration for a child's room theme. Looking for toys and other decorations that are similar to those that are in a painting or print, and then displaying them on a shelf nearby can make it seem like the artwork is almost being drawn out into the rest of the room.

Inspiration from Other Types of Wall Art
You can use other types of wall art besides paintings and prints as a source of inspiration. For example, a vintage wagon wheel hung on the wall could be the basis for an overall Western theme in a room. In the kitchen, beautiful hand-painted dishes can be displayed on the wall and intermixed with Tuscan style copper wall art. An antique game board could be hung on the wall to create a fun theme for a family room or game room. An Indian blanket displayed on the wall could be the basis for a Southwestern theme. There is just no end to the beautiful room decorating themes that you can draw from the inspiration of art.
